Implementing Positive Change at Aldburgh Estate

On 25 September 2025, farmers and land managers are invited to join us for a special two-farm visit at the Aldburgh Estate, organised in partnership with Pasture for Life. The day will showcase how local farms are putting regenerative practices into action and shaping a more sustainable future for farming and biodiversity in Nidderdale.

What to expect

The visit will include two farms within the Aldburgh Estate that are taking bold steps to implement positive change:

  • Bales Farm, Healey
Nestled on the edge of SSSI moorland, Bales Farm is leading the way in adaptive grazing. With FiPL funding, the farm has installed extensive water and fencing infrastructure to support Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) Grazing. Farm manager and team are making impressive progress with:

    • Bale grazing and native Angus cattle
    • Moving towards a system that avoids reliance on harvested grass
    • Prioritising soil health as a foundation for farm resilience
    • Supporting wildlife, from diverse plant life to bird species

Nidderdale National Landscape’s FiPL Officer, Matt Trevelyan, describes Bales Farm as one of the most inspiring sites he has visited this year:

“The farm team are farming in an innovative manner, acutely aware of the need to build soil health and biodiversity. I am particularly interested to see how these adaptive grazing systems deliver both intended and incidental benefits for nature.”

  • Southcote Farm
Just across the river, Southcote Farm is a mixed farm exploring the production of ‘in conversion’ milling grains for human consumption. With 85% of UK grain grown for animal feed, this shift is a vital part of the Pasture for Life approach, which champions 100% pasture-fed livestock and frees up arable land for human food.

Guest speakers

Alongside the farm visits, the event will feature expert speakers:

  • Chirrup – an AI bird survey company using innovative acoustic devices to monitor birdlife in Nidderdale.
  • Nelly Trevelyan, Yorkshire Organic Millers – sharing the work of the Yorkshire Grain Alliance and the movement towards real bread.
  • Matt Trevelyan, Nidderdale National Landscape – launching the new Catch the Rain Project, which will measure how farmers are improving soil infiltration and making Nidderdale’s soils more “spongelike” to capture and store rainwater.
