Hackfall

A beautiful Grade 1 listed woodland garden with follies, waterfalls and surprise views.

A beautiful area of ancient semi-natural woodland set within a steep, rocky gorge of the River Ure. Owned by the Woodland Trust and managed by the Hackfall Trust, it is open to all who want to explore it.

It was bought in 1731 by the Aislabie family and developed into a fashionable woodland garden with follies, grottoes, surprise views and waterfalls.

A haven for wildlife, it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Grade 1 site in the English Heritage Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England.

You can walk to Hackfall along the River Ure from Masham or on public rights of way from Grewelthorpe. There is also a small free car park on the Grewelthorpe to Masham Road.

Additional Information

Accessible Toilets Toilets
There are no toilets on site. The nearest public toilets are in Masham (about 2 miles away) behind the Bruce Arms. Location – ///famines.stupidly.bikes. There is also a toilet at Grewelthorpe Village Hall which is open when the cafe is open.
Parking Parking
There is a small, free car park on the Grewelthorpe to Masham Road. The car park can get busy, particularly at weekends. Please do not park on the roadside adjacent to the car park. This is a very dangerous bend and the road is often busy with large vehicles.
Dog Walking Dogs
Dogs are welcome but please keep them under close control and on a lead at all times around livestock. Please clean up after your dog.
Accessible Accessibility Information
There is no disabled access to Hackfall and the terrain makes it impossible to provide access for wheelchairs. The site is very steep with narrow, uneven paths, tree roots and many steep drops. Paths can also be very muddy in places.
Trails Trails
There are a number of trails throughout the wood taking in the different heritage features. These are signposted throughout the site or available in the Hackfall Walks leaflet.
