Plastic tree shelters protect new trees as they grow, enabling many saplings to survive that would otherwise die due to rabbits, deer and other mammals. However, the plastic they leave behind is polluting our soils and waterways.
We are working in partnership with the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) to free trees of their plastic, through the Tubex tree shelter collection and recycling programme.
Local teams of volunteers will work with landowners to remove, sort and collect the tree guards into bulk bags. Each bulk bag can hold 350-400 1.2m tree shelters
These can then be taken to Skipton in early May for recycling by Tubex into new tree guards and other plastic products, leaving the Nidderdale landscape with less plastic pollution and happy healthy trees growing for everyone’s future.
Join us on our mission to promote recycling and environmental stewardship in your area. Together, we can make a meaningful impact in our local communities and on the wider planet.
Fact: It is estimated that 16 million plastic tree shelters are used every year to protect new trees as they grow.
