Nidderdale’s scenic rivers and reservoirs offer some of the finest fishing opportunities in the Yorkshire Dales.

Where can I go fishing?

Stand at the edge of any of the Washburn Valley reservoirs – Fewston, Swinsty and Thruscross – and you’ll be surrounded by beautiful views and abundant wildlife, while casting a rod into the water.

Yorkshire Water manages all three, which are easily reached from the Yorkshire Dales, Harrogate, Otley or Leeds; and keeps them well stocked with wild brown and rainbow trout.

For more information including opening times, prices and river levels please visit the Yorkshire Water website.

For a fishing experience where you’ll find solitude in a more remote location, head to Scar House Reservoir in Upper Nidderdale. Here, anglers can test their skills to hook a wild brown trout while looking across to the peaks of Little and Great Whernside and the dramatic historic dam (NB: Anglers keen to fish at Scar House need to purchase a day ticket from Nidderdale Angling Club).

For around seven miles from the lower end of Gouthwaite Reservoir to Dacre Banks, stretches of the River Nidd can be accessed for fishing courtesy of the Nidderdale Angling Club.

Here the river flows under a canopy of alder trees which harbour the insects loved by brown trout and grayling. There are several access points including platforms for disabled anglers near Pateley Bridge.

For day ticket pricing, access points and tuition please visit the Nidderdale Angling Club website.

Salmon, wild brown trout and grayling can be fished on the Swinton Estate, Masham along four miles of single bank fishing on the River Ure and over six miles of double bank fishing on the River Burn.

Through careful management, the Estate, working with the Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust, is ensuring fish habitats are preserved and populations are sustainable.

For more details and to book online go to the Swinton Estate website. Lessons can also be booked through the Northern Fishing School based on the Estate.
